Nostalgia: Remembering the Best Symbian Operating System. Have you ever used a Symbian phone in the 90s to 2000s? 

 

Symbian is an operating system for mobile devices developed by Symbian Ltd. and later acquired by Nokia.

This operating system is designed for use on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Symbian became very popular in the 2000s and early 2010s, especially in Europe, because many smartphone manufacturers used this operating system on their products.

Symbian is based on a kernel (core operating system) called "EKA2" (or "EPOC Kernel Architecture 2"), which is designed for use on mobile devices with limited resources such as battery power and memory. 

 

This operating system is also equipped with a user interface called "S60" (or "Series 60"), which became very popular on Nokia phones.

However, in late 2010, Nokia announced that they would be switching to another operating system, such as Windows Phone, and in 2013, Symbian was discontinued and no longer supported. Currently, Symbian is rarely used and has been replaced by modern mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android.

So Where is Symbian OS Now?
Symbian OS has unfortunately been discontinued and is no longer supported by its developer, Nokia. This discontinuation of development occurred in 2013, because at that time Nokia had switched to another platform, namely Windows Phone.

Since then, Symbian OS is no longer used and has been replaced by modern mobile operating systems such as iOS and Android. 

 

Some Symbian phones that are still used by users may still function, but will not receive operating system updates or developer support.

Therefore, users who are still using Symbian phones should consider switching to a more modern and supported platform. It is a shame that it is no longer developed, because Symbian OS is one of the best operating systems at that time. If only it had continued to be developed until now, Symbian OS could compete with Android and iOS.

Lack of Development on Symbian OS

Symbian OS was discontinued and no longer supported for several reasons. One of the main reasons was the intense competition with other mobile platforms such as iOS and Android, which were becoming more popular among smartphone users.

Symbian was considered less competitive and unable to compete with other modern mobile platforms in terms of features, security, and user experience that wanted future features that were currently used on all smartphones.

In addition, Nokia, the main developer of Symbian, had switched to another platform, Windows Phone, at that time. 

 

Nokia hoped to win the smartphone market with the Windows Phone platform, but this strategy did not work, and Nokia was later acquired by Microsoft. Therefore, Symbian development was no longer a priority for Nokia and was eventually discontinued.

Finally, the discontinuation of Symbian development was also driven by the desire to focus on more modern platforms and supported by larger developers, such as Android and iOS. 

 

These are more popular platforms and offer more opportunities for application developers to make their applications run on more modern and latest mobile platforms.

In order to meet the changing demands of users and the market, Nokia and other Symbian developers decided to stop developing and supporting Symbian and switch to other more competitive and modern platforms.

The Last and Discontinued Symbian OS Series

Symbian OS has several series and versions released over the years. The last Symbian OS series released was Symbian^3 (pronounced as "Symbian three"), which was introduced in 2010. 

 

Some Nokia smartphones that use Symbian^3 include the Nokia N8, Nokia E7, and Nokia C7.

After Symbian^3, Nokia released Symbian Anna and Belle as updates to Symbian^3. Symbian Anna was introduced in 2011 and brought several improvements and new features, such as a faster and more responsive user interface, and improvements to Microsoft Office applications.

Symbian Belle, released in the same year, brought more significant improvements, including a more modern and customizable user interface, and improvements to the web browser and camera application.

However, after the discontinuation of Symbian development in 2013, no new series were released. Since then, Symbian OS is no longer supported and has been replaced by modern mobile platforms such as iOS and Android.

 

It is very unfortunate, if only the Symbian operating system still existed until now, it would be cool and could be a rival to Android and iOS. But now Symbian OS has closed and who knows whether it can be continued or not. Hopefully Symbian OS will be back, especially for Symbian Lovers in Indonesia.
